Cantaloupe Recall

Del Monte Fresh Produce N.A., Inc. of Coral Gables, FL, is voluntarily recalling 4,992 cartons of cantaloupes. This cantaloupe recall is being implemented following a notification from FDA that there is an epidemiologic link between the cantaloupes and approximately 12 reported cases of Salmonella Panama.

The cantaloupes were distributed through warehouse clubs in Alaska, California, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, and Washington. The recalled products have the Del Monte Logo and indication “3 count, Product of Guatemala.” They were available for sale between March 10 and 21.

The cantaloupes, grown in and shipped from Del Monte Freshs’ farm Asuncion Mita in Guatemala, have a light brown color skin on the exterior, with orange flesh. Del Monte Fresh has put on hold the production and distribution of the product from the affected farm. The FDA and the company will continue their investigation as to what, including whether the company’s product, caused the problem.

Here is a perfect example of the small American farm is getting beat-up with regulation, but they are not regulating the produce that comes into this country. They can use different spray that we can’t, production process is not regulated and they pay their works nothing, but yet the American farmers our having to shut down because they can’t afford to farm/compete with the lower prices of foreign countries because of regulations.

Looks like Dole, like many large corporations has become like a large ship, unable to quickly and efftectively control the production of its product. Sad but usually the case when the company gets so large that the owner(s) are no longer real farmers.
