Latest Florida Citrus Forecast Hits Season’s First Snag
The updated USDA Florida citrus crop estimate has revealed the first hiccup of the 2014-2015 season.
The January forecast shows Florida overall orange production at 103 million boxes (48 million early, midseason, Navel, and Temple varieties + 55 million Valencias). The total is down 5% from the initial forecast of 108 million boxes, which stood pat through last month’s report.
“This decrease was about what we expected after what we’ve heard from the field over the past few weeks,” said Mike Sparks, executive VP/CEO of Florida Citrus Mutual. “Supply was already tight and it just got tighter.”
Florida grapefruit production figures remain at 15 million boxes.
The projection for frozen concentrated orange juice was lowered to 1.59 gallons per box.
