New Herbicide From Syngenta Receives EPA Registration

Syngenta’s new Broadworks herbicide is the first HPPD inhibitor approved by the EPA in tree nuts, citrus, and stone fruit.

Broadworks is a systemic herbicide, taken up by the leaves, shoots, or roots and is translocated in both the xylem and the phloem, complex tissues that perform transportation of food and water in a plant. Within 24 hours of application, as much as 88% of the applied material is translocated out of the treated zone and is distributed throughout the plant.

Broadworks’ mode of action inhibits a plant enzyme called hydroxyphenylpyruvate dioxygenase (HPPD) that is essential to photosynthesis and prevents formation of carotenoids in susceptible plant species. Without carotenoids, light energy and by-products of photosynthesis will destroy chlorophyll and cell membranes. This results in bleaching of leaves, followed by necrosis and death of the plant.

“Broadworks will bring a new mode of action to the table for citrus, tree nut and stone fruit growers concerned about managing glyphosate-resistant broadleaf weeds,” John Foresman, product lead for Syngenta says. “It will provide growers a much-needed new tool for handling an increasingly challenging weed-management landscape.”

The new herbicide boasts control in glyphosate-resistant weeds such as marestail and fleabane. It also controls broadleaf weeds and grasses.

With a single active ingredient, Broadworks enables flexibility when choosing tank-mix partners, by fitting in a program with other modes of action to create a full-season weed control program.

“Broadworks is going to be a really good partner for a number of other herbicides in the market,” Brad Hanson, cooperative Extension weed specialist at University of California-Davis said. “I see it as a really useful tool for a grower that takes a programmatic approach to weed control.”

The active ingredient in Broadworks will provide broad-spectrum and systemic activity on broadleaf weed species with demonstrated crop safety. When tank-mixed, Broadworks also provides enhanced burndown and residual weed control.
