ICYMI: We Just Had the Hottest September in 140 Years!

Add another note of dubious distinction to 2020. NOAA’s National Centers for Environmental Information has officially recorded what was the globe’s hottest September on record, which dates back to 1880. This comes on the heels of what was the hottest summer (June through August) on file.

According to NOAA, the average global temperature in September was 1.75°F above the 20th-century average of 59°F. This surpasses the average global temperatures for both September 2015 and 2016 by 0.04 of a degree, which previously tied for the hottest Septembers on record.

The 10 warmest Septembers have all occurred since 2005, btw, with the seven warmest occurring in the last seven years.

On the opposite end of the weather spectrum, NOAA has just released its official winter climate outlook for 2020-2021. The La Niña climate phase is in effect and will be influencing weather patterns for next several months.
