Gem, A New Fire-Blight-Resistant Pear Cultivar, Makes Its Debut

Gem, a new fire blight-resistant pear cultivar boasts high yields, fruit quality, and long fruit storage. This attractive pear has a fit in the fresh market and has shown to not be susceptible to superficial scald.

The pear needs three weeks of cold storage treatment, but will store for 28 weeks without superficial scald or core breakdown.

The flavor of Gem is sweet and aromatic with a crisp, juicy texture with similarities to Bartlett.

The release is a partnership with the USDA, Oregon State University, Michigan State University, and Clemson University.
