Drought Could Impact Spring California Strawberry Crop

Ventura County’s Farm Bureau expects to see a reduction of between 1,500 and 2,000 acres of strawberries for spring, in part because of the drought’s impact on water for irrigation, reports KNBC in Los Angeles.

“Because of the drought, we’ve been pumping the daylights out of those aquifers. And that’s caused water levels to fall,” says Ventura County Farm Bureau’s CEO, John Krist.

Surface water availability has also taken a hit with recent dry seasons.

“Groundwater is at its lowest level in 25 years,” said Anthony Emmert, assistant general manager of the United Water Conservation District.
