Best Time To Apply Sprays For Insect Control
Following petal fall is when apple growers need to be making applications to control plum curculio and European apple sawfly, says Grzegorz Krawczyk, Penn State University Extension tree fruit entomologist.
“The petal fall timing on apples will also be a good time to control Oriental fruit moth (OFM), obliquebanded leafroller, mites, and aphids” Krawczyk writes. “Appropriate, effective insecticides should be applied based on orchard monitoring and documented pest control needs.”

Brown marmorated stink bugs have also been found in area orchards in Adams County, however those numbers are not as significant as counts in local homes.
“Although on an average sunny day we collect more (BMSB) per day in our house than traps collected per week, it is a good indicator of improved efficacy of new BMSB traps and lures,” he says. “The petal fall insecticide application in peaches directed against plum curculio and Oriental fruit moth should also provide excellent control of BMSB.”
