Fruit Grower Tour Held Next Week In New York

Registration begins at 9:30 a.m. on Aug. 5 for the 17th annual Wayne County Fruit Grower Tour presented by agr.assistance.

Tour stops include:

  1. Wilbert’s Fruit Farm on Walworth-Ontario Rd., Walworth NY (9:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.); Topics include:
  • Improving apple return bloom, pollination, and crop set via crop nutrition and PGRs
  • Frost control in orchards including site selection, frost-fighting machines, and post-frost Promalin-Perlan PGR use
  • Demo of Agrofrost Frostbuster frost prevention unit
  • Demo of Rubberstock excavator demonstrating post pounding with tamper
  1. Lagoner Farms on Tuckahoe Rd., Williamson, NY (1:15-2:45 p.m.); Topics include:
  • Apple scab control in 2015 – what worked well and what did not
  • Producing hard cider on the farm and launching Embark Craft Cider Works
  • Demo of checking your orchard sprayer coverage using Surround solar protectant
  • Demo of New Holland TD 40-30 plus Rears tower sprayer
  • Demo of Munckhof PLUK-O-TRAK apple harvest/pruning platform plus REVO Piuma 4WD harvester
  1. Jay DeBadts & Sons on Maple Ave., Sodus, NY (3:30-4:45); Topics include
  • Improving tree growth in weak varieties like Red Delicious and NY1 (Snapdragon)
  • Fire blight control in 2015
  • Update on black stem borer and its possible control
  • Demo of Huron Fruit Systems Picking Platform
