Michigan, New York Growers Hit By Yet Another Freeze
Tree fruit, grape, and berry growers in the Great Lakes area, ranging from Michigan to New York, were hit by yet another cold spell this past weekend. The latest freeze could potentially wipe out up to 100% of the crop at some farms.
Michigan State University (MSU) Extension’s Fruit website (http://msue.anr.msu.edu/topic/info/fruit) posted reports of frost damage in the southeast part of the state over the weekend. In addition, Amy Irish-Brown with MSU Extension reminded growers of the importance of contacting their crop insurance companies. “If you have insured crops, you should contact your insurance agent as soon as possible — typically within 48 hours after a freeze event. This is very important so that your loss is acknowledged by the insurance provider.”
Damage also appears significant along the Ridge in western Michigan, as evidenced by this report on the website Michigan Live.
Further east, New York apple growers in Wayne County were dealing with their own freeze events. Check out this report on the WHAM website to learn more.
