Montana Cherry Growers Seek New Varieties To Compete In Market
Cherry growers in Northwestern Montana will have some incentive to transition from Lambert cherries to more varieties in order to be more competitive in the cherry market. Flathead Lake Cherry Growers cooperative seeks to find a solution to being shut out of processing facilities due to a later Washington cherry harvest.
Varieties in the study are firmer and with as much taste as the Flathead Lambert and Lapin but will offer growers some flexibility in an early harvest for farmer’s markets as well as a later harvest for processing in Washington.
The cooperative seeks to find two varieties to recommend to growers.
