Almond Food Quality and Safety Speakers Set

The Almond Board of California’s annual Food Quality and Safety Symposium will be held July 2 at the Modesto Centre Plaza. Speakers will update the California Almond industry on the current status and requirements of the Food Safety Modernization Act’s two announced rules: the Produce Safety rule and the GMPs and Preventive Controls rule.

Speakers include:

Dr. Scott Burnett — manager, Corporate Quality & Food Safety — MOM Brands (Malt O Meal). He will address control/challenges associated with pathogens in low moisture facilities.

Dr. Trevor Suslow — University of California-Davis, will discuss the use of manure and compost material as well as migration of microorganisms from animal operations to adjacent fields. His presentation will include what has been learned from the produce industry.

Dr. Hildegarde Heymann — UC-Davis, speaking on the almond sensory lexicon. Dr. Heymann’s presentation will include an interactive sensory demonstration.
