Fostering The Next Almond Industry Leaders

The Almond Leadership Program Class of 2015

In 2009, the Almond Board of California set out on a mission to encourage a new set of individuals with diverse backgrounds to become leaders in the industry. The result was the creation of the Almond Leadership Program, which Almond Board Manager of Industry Relations Jenny Nicolau says is a natural fit for motivated individuals with a vested interest in the California almond industry.

The no-cost, year-long program is designed to provide a mentored experience forthe next generation, including leadership training seminars, hands-on educational opportunities, field experience and a firsthand look at the inner workings of the Almond Board. In addition, members of the leadership classjob-shadow a mentor and write a paper about the experience.

“The goal is to give participants an opportunity to explore and understand another career within the California almond industry that they might not be fully aware of, and to gain a newfound respect for the various aspects that contribute to the success of the industry,” Nicolau says. “Pairings are meant to be mutually beneficial to both the participant and the mentor – it’s very common for a mentor to feel like they learned just as much, if not more, from these young leaders.”

By the end of the program, the class will have a well-rounded education in the almond industry and an enhanced understanding of the issues facing it, Nicolau says. In addition, participants will have an expanded network of professional contacts in the industry.
