Watch High Tech Take Onion Crops from Start To Finish
Bringing any crop to harvest takes patience and persistence across many elements of production. One of those elements is weed control. Shay Myers, CEO of Owyhee Produce in Parma, ID, has found weed control success with lasers. And he wants the world to know it.
Not only is Myers a vegetable grower, but he also has a robust following on social media (nearly 427,000 followers on TikTok alone). Recently, he shared on his LinkedIn page about what they are doing to get “probably some of the biggest onions in the Treasure Valley” so soon.
He says it starts with planting early — ahead of the competition.
Step 2 was proper watering from the outset.
Step 3 was NOT using herbicide on the field. How did they get by doing this? In the post, he emphasizes how his LaserWeeder is really helping streamline the production process for his onion crop.
He writes: “WE USE LASERS TO HAVE BEAUTIFUL CROPS! Consistent weed control across the field, achieved by laser weeding, can lead to more uniform onion sizes and appearance. This can be especially important for growers aiming for a high-quality product.”
