Fresh Produce Investigated In Chipotle E. Coli Outbreak

Chipotle closed 43 of its restaurants in Washington and Oregon after more than 20 people became ill last month with an E. coli infection. According to an article on NBCnews.com, the number of people who have become sick has risen, bringing the current total to 37.

Eight Chipotle restaurants have been linked to the outbreak.

Specific food or foods have not been positively identified, but fresh produce is being investigated.

In a recent report released by the Centers for Disease ControlSalmonella, E. Coli and Listeria, which are the leading causes of multistate outbreaks, are more serious than leading causes of single-state outbreaks. Typically, the report indicates, foodborne illness outbreaks occur at the local level involving a single location or restaurant.

According to a Foxnews.com article, 12 people have fallen ill, but no deaths have been reported.
