New Crop Protection Tools In Hand
In the past few months, a number of new crop protection products have received registrations or labels for new uses. These products are important to growers of fruit and vegetable crops in Florida.
The EPA has renewed registration without time limitation for all Midas (iodomethane) products. A replacement for methyl bromide, Midas is a broadspectrum soil fumigant that effectively controls a broad range of soilborne diseases, nematodes, weed seeds, and insects that threaten strawberries, tomatoes, peppers, and other crops.
New Synapse, approved for Florida use, protects brassica, cucurbit, fruiting, and leafy vegetable crops from a broad spectrum of worm larvae. It can halt feeding damage minutes after ingestion, protecting more of the crop’s quality and yield potential.
In addition to fast knockdown, the product has long residual control thanks to a new active ingredient from a new chemical class called flubendiamide. In addition, Synapse poses minimal risk to beneficials in integrated pest management (IPM) programs and also fits existing resistance management practices, thanks to an all-new mode of action.
Chemtura Corporation and Taminco, Inc. have announced an agreement to appoint Chemtura as exclusive distributor for Thiram Granuflo (tetramethylthiuram disulfide) within the U.S. The product is a broad spectrum fungicide for plant disease control on strawberries and peaches.
Dow AgroSciences recently received federal registration from EPA for new Lorsban Advanced insecticide. Lorsban Advanced offers the same benefits of Lorsban-4E but uses innovative technology to produce a low-odor, water-based formulation.
Lorsban Advanced is formulated as an emulsion in water (EW). This water-based formulation differs from Lorsban-4E, which is an emulsifiable concentrate. It is the only chlorpyrifos-containing insecticide available as an EW in the U.S.
Lorsban Advanced offers growers superb versatility to control insects in pome fruit, tree nuts, grapes, citrus, vegetables, and other crops. The insecticide provides superior control of all cutworm species as well as broad-spectrum control of aphids, scale, spider mites, citrus psylla, lepidopterous insects, and other pests.
DuPont Crop Protection received Florida registration approval for Coragen last year. The new insecticide for use on vegetables and fruit contains the active ingredient Rynaxypyr that provides effective control of target pests at low-use rates while making a minimal impact on beneficials. Coragen is registered for use on many vegetable crops, including lettuce, peppers, and tomatoes.
Recently registered Mustang Max EW (zeta-cypermethrin) provides the same control as Mustang EW. Mustang Max EW is a cost-effective solution for controlling multiple pests, providing excellent knockdown of key insects and maintaining that control for higher yields and increased profit potential for growers.
Mustang Max EW is approved for use on a variety of tree fruit and vegetable crops, including brassicas, leafy and fruiting vegetables, and fruiting trees. The unique formulation provides consistent control of key insects such as peach twig borer, navel orangeworm, walnut husk fly, cabbage looper, aphids, leaf hoppers, silverleaf whiteflies, and bollworm, among others.
Rotam U.S.A. recently announced the full registration by EPA and the impending launch of its Abacus miticide/insecticide. The product is based on the active ingredient abamectin and is a post-patent alternative to the familiar brands Agri-Mek and Avid miticides/insecticides.
Abacus provides control of mites (including two-spotted spider mite, Pacific, strawberry, Carmine, and McDaniel spider mites, European red mite, and citrus bud mite), certain leafhoppers, leafminers, and thrips, plus pear psylla, and Colorado potato beetle. The product is labeled for crops that include almonds, walnuts, apples, celery, citrus, cotton, cucurbits, grapes, lettuce, hops, pears, peppers, potatoes, strawberries, and tomatoes.
Durivo has been approved for use in Florida. It is a systemic insecticide that employs two modes of action to protect vegetables from chewing and sucking insects, as well as lepidopteran pests. When Durivo is applied through drip (trickle) chemigation, it is readily taken up by the roots of germinating seedlings or transplants and is rapidly translocated throughout the plant via the xylem to protect plants from the inside.
Durivo is an enhanced solution because it contains two modes of action, chlorantraniliprole, a new mode of action from the diamide family of insecticides, and thiamethoxam, a member of the neonicotinoid class of chemistry. The product provides very long residual control of pests.
Valent U.S.A. Corporation has received additional EPA registrations for Presidio (fluopicolide) fungicide in brassica (head and stem), bulb, and root vegetable crops (except carrots, potatoes, and sugar beets).
Introduced earlier this year for grapes, leafy greens, and fruiting vegetables, Presidio’s targeted chemistry has proven highly effective for growers with crops threatened by downy mildew. Presidio also controls late blight (Phytophthora infestans), and root, crown, and fruit rots caused by Phytophthora capsici in vegetables.
Presidio has a novel mode of action and is in a new chemical class, giving growers a powerful tool to control tough diseases and ward off resistance issues. Presidio protects crops to help protect quality and grower profits and yields.
