Now Seeking Future Farmers

Farming is not for the faint of heart. It takes a certain type of individual to accept the responsibilities that come with growing produce. Continuing to find willing participants to not only keep tradition alive, but also maintain the important task of feeding and clothing a growing population is becoming more daunting. A shortage of youngsters seeking a career in agriculture is a viable threat to the industry’s future. However, for the up-and-comers who are interested, opportunity abounds.

How to entice the younger generation to agribusiness was one of the topics explored by a panel of growers during the 2013 Florida Ag Expo. Responding to questions posed by moderator Mike Aerts of the Florida Fruit & Vegetable Association was Michael Hill of Lakeshore Growers, Paul Orsenigo of Grower’s Management Inc., Tom O’Brien of C & D Fruit and Vegetable Co., and Jamie Williams of Lipman. Each lent their perspective on what’s standing in the way and what’s needed to fortify the future of the industry.
