Onion Recall Expands to Taylor Farms and Progressive Produce

When FDA and CDC first linked the multi-state Salmonella Newport outbreak to onions last week, only a single grower/packer recalled its onions: Thomson International. Two more packers — Taylor Farms and Progressive Farms — issued recalls this past week, reducing the likelihood the contamination took place in a packing shed.

Update on the Outbreak

The latest CDC update significantly increases the number of states and people reporting infections.

  • Reported U.S. Cases: 640
  • Number of States Involved: 43
  • Hospitalizations: 85

Luckily, there have been no deaths at this point. Several mainstream grocery stores issued their own recalls on red, white, yellow, and sweet onions. The recalls include prepared foods as well as fresh onions.

The investigation is still ongoing. Officials have not yet identified a definitive source of the outbreak.
