Salmonella Outbreak Source Is Still Unknown
CDC reports a significant Salmonella outbreak is under way, but it does not yet know what food is the culprit. It has sickened almost 300 people over 29 states. Texas and Oklahoma are reporting the most cases, at 81 and 40 people. Ten percent of those sickened have checked into hospitals.
Investigators are concentrating on samples taken from restaurants where those infected with Salmonella Oranienburg ate.
The agency has identified groups of people who did not know each other, ate at the same restaurant, and sickened. Investigators hope to narrow which foods they consumed in common.

A takeout condiment cup containing cilantro and lime tested positive. The patient who shared the cup reports it once contained onions, as well.
“Because multiple food items were present in the container and in the sample that was tested, it is not possible to know which food item was contaminated. We are using this information in conjunction with other available information to help narrow the list of possible foods linked to illness,” CDC reports.
