Study: Many Unwilling To Waver On GMOs, Global Warming

According to a new University of Florida study, even when armed with new information, many people won’t change their minds about genetically modified foods and global warming.

In fact, some grow even more stubborn in their beliefs that GMOs are unsafe, said Brandon McFadden, a UF/IFAS assistant professor in food and resource economics.

To McFadden’s surprise, after participants read scientific information stating that genetically modified foods are safe, 12% of the study’s participants said they felt such foods were less safe – not more.

“This is critical and hopefully demonstrates that as a society we should be more flexible in our beliefs before collecting information from multiple sources,” McFadden said. “Also, this indicates scientific findings about a societal risk likely have diminishing value over time.”

For the study, published in the current issue of the journal Food Policy, McFadden led a research project that surveyed 961 people across the U.S. via the Internet in April 2013.

To assess their beliefs about genetically modified foods, participants were asked to respond to statements such as: “Genetically modified crops are safe to eat.” To gauge their beliefs about humans and global warming, they responded to statements such as: “The Earth is getting warmer because of human actions.”

Then they were given scientific information about genetically modified foods and global warming.

For example, researchers showed them this quote from the National Research Council regarding genetically modified food: “To date, no adverse health effects attributed to genetic engineering have been documented in the human population.”

Respondents read several quotes about global warming, including this one from the American Association for the Advancement of Science: “The scientific evidence is clear: Global climate change caused by human activities is occurring now, and it is a growing threat to society.”

After reading statements from scientific groups, participants were asked about their beliefs regarding the safety of genetically modified foods. The choices ranged from “much less safe” to “much more safe.”

The results showed that before they received the information, 32% believed genetically modified foods were safe to eat; 32% were not sure and 36% did not believe GMO foods were safe to eat. After they received scientific information, about 45% believed genetically modified foods were safer to eat and 43% were not swayed by the information.

Then they were asked to assess the extent to which they believe human involvement caused global warming. They were given choices ranging from “much less involved” to “much more involved.”

The study showed that before they received the information, 64% believed human actions are causing global warming; 18% were not sure and 18% did not believe human actions are to blame. After receiving scientific information about global warming, about 50% of participants believed even more strongly that human actions lead to global warming, while 44% were not swayed by the information, the study showed.

Not surprising. The quotes presented are from government mouthpieces. No independent studies that haven’t been bought and paid for. Most of the independent studies show concern about GMOs. Rises in cancer, IBS and gastro issues over the last 30 years seem to correlate with rising GMO consumption. Chronic issues are rarely studied, especially when there is no money from government or industry to fund it. It is only when the evidence becomes so clear from so many sources that real studies are done.

As to man made global warming? No one I know believes that what man is doing will have any real effect on the climate. Carbon emissions from one volcano can easily dwarf what man does for decades. This is all a scheme to tax people more to help pay for corrupt politicians who have bankrupted their countries. Look at all of the carbon taxes that are being proposed. This whole “global warming” scam is just that, a scam.

Does climate change happen? Sure! Ever heard of an ice age? The simple fact is that the climate on this planet is not fixed. It WILL change. I do not believe that man’s current work on this plant has any major impact positive or negative.

The difference between accepting that GMOs are safe, and accepting that human activity is causing global warming is simple.

GMOs have been on the market for two decades, and not a single illness or death has been reported. During that same time frame, the planet’s atmosphere has not warmed.

In other words, the safety of GMOs is based on the accumulation of past experience, while the theory of anthropogenic global-warming is based on the prediction of future events. And I have yet to meet someone who good at predicting the future, especially 100 years from now.

Mischa,
Well said.

Wow! and those three first comments are the root of the problem. Mischa where did you get the information that there has been no global warming in the past 20 years? That is totally false! no quibbling, flat out false. Further GMO’s have been around much longer than 20 years, google ‘ sweet potatoes a natural GMO” yep, there are natural GMOs and man has eaten tons of them over the past millennia, in fact whole populations have survived with them as a major source of food. It seems to be the fact that you object to the warming being said to be man made, when that is really irrelevant at this point, the fact that it is getting warm enough to melt glaciers world wide and flood coastlines is not irrelevant. If we do not want all our major cities that are located along coasts to sink causing a collapse of economies world wide we had better do something now. Please stop wasting our time with silly arguments, if you want to believe the earth is flat and insist on that, go ahead, just get out of the way of people that are trying to stop the disaster on our doorstep.

Let’s see if Ellen is open to looking at real data rather than regurgitating hysteria! Here is the information that she asks for. The pause in global warming is real – it has lasted as long as the rise in global temperature from 1980 to 1996. This article isn’t an opinion piece, but data released by the Met office (Great Britian’s climate research unit).

Unless I’m mistaken, Ellen’s refusal to change her opinion based on data only reinforces the study’s results.

There seems to be no disagreement that GMOs will impact the gene pool and impact and reduce the viability of open-pollenated varieties. That is well-known and documented, even though health effects are not proven.

Oh boy, you talk about hot stuff, I wanted to get into this but, I’m not sure I want to. Up front I’m not a fan of GMO’s or So Called Global Warming, But I think what happens in these discussion’s, that we forget it is a discussion, not an argument. Forcing one’s will over an other persons thoughts is not discussing the facts at hand. I think that we have lost the ability to talk to one another, today we seem to have picked up on Obama’s “My way or the highway” and to me, that’s not good. Both subjects today are important to everyone here in there own way. Well I’ve said enough.
Thank you
Vince

First of all having thee two items in the sam question is a non-statrer, as you can be convinced of one and not the other.

Global climate change is real, 97% of the World’s climate scientists agree it is changing and human activity is a major cause. That’s it, all in all done! Unless you believe all these scientists got together in some smoke filled room and planned to pull a prank on the world.

GMOs on the other hand, especially where you are mixing genetic material form different species is a rather new process and it is not proven to be safe. Think of things like Africanized bees, buffelgrass, Russian thistle, Kudzu. Once things get released into the environment, they are often difficult or even impossible to control.

In both of these cases is it not reasonable to error on the side of caution?

Matt, all studies are paid for! If not by one agency, another, some have agendas, those that share your view included! If I can’t believe Universities and scientists why should I believe you, when you obviously have a flat world agenda! You state “Carbon emissions from one volcano can easily dwarf what man does for decades.” that is true but you fail to mention it will decline after aerosols and dust leave the atmosphere. We have see a steady increase. Let me save you the trouble of parroting Fox New to me here by telling you there has been no decline or evening off of world wide temperature increase over the last 20 years. The problem was a data snafu between land based and ocean buoy data. When that was discovered and remedied it proves a steady incline in temperatures. World wide melting glaciers have no agenda, it is what it is, they are not controlled by either side of the discussion. If 100 thousand year old glaciers are melting, what is your explanation for that phenomenon ? Perhaps it’s the government or the liberals, or maybe even the scientists and Universities! Small island nations are being flooded as we argue ask them if this is just a conspiracy. And when all the people too lazy to investigate what is really happening on their own realize it will cause them their wealth and homes and livelihood I hope they turn on people like you and ask you why you tried to tell them they just had to wait for one good volcanic eruption of a VEI 6 nature to save them.

Global warming temperature increase has not stalled, the method of gathering ocean surface temperatures has changed. Temperatures used to be taken from the decks of ships, now temperatures are taken from buoys. Have been on a boat before?, the deck heats up a bit in the sun, more than the ocean surface does. Interesting that when science says GMOs are are safe, you believe it, but when science says the planet is getting warmer, you disbelieve.

My opinion, i wish global warming was a hoax and i am not sure about GMOs.

Don’t lump global warming and GMOs in your survey together. Two different issues, two different opinions.

I don’t think consumers have the right to know what is in the food they purchase. Either fresh or proceed, only government officials and corporations should know. As a republic we need to trust that the government knows what is best for us. After all, that is what is so great about democracy and why America is the best country in the world. As for global warming, it is not up to individual citizens to draw conclusions. That is the government’s responsibility. Those on the ‘extreme left’ who are obsessed with this issue are doing a great disservice to the structure of our society. The goverment need needs to step in and silence these people.

Avatar for Todd Todd says:

Warren, you wish the government to step in and silence people. Ignoring the right to free speech, just how would the government do this and what issues are we not to talk about publicly? President George W. Bush affirmed “Global Warming”, he is an individual, is he a extreme lefty? Should the government step in and remind Bush that he is retired? Democracy is a system of government, where the people make decisions by voting. Talking about issues informs and misinforms people, the process is great and a pain in the back side. Countries that prohibit free speech; Sudan, Tunisia, Indonesia, Iran, Israel, Pakistan, China and Saudi Arabia, mostly on religious subjects (blasphemy).
