Two Melon Recalls Announced This Week

Two major retailers announced separate melon recalls this past week. At this time, there are no reports of illness.

Cut Watermelon and Apple Recall

On October 3, 2020, Walmart and its supplier Country Fresh issued recalls on fresh fruit packages, primarily apples and watermelon. The products may be infected with Listeria monocytogenes.

Country Fresh shipped the recalled fruit to Walmart stores in nine states: Arizona, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Missouri, Oklahoma, and Texas. The initial recall included just cut watermelon, but Walmart and Country Fresh later expanded it to several other cut fruit.

Country Fresh says this is a voluntary recall, and FDA’s recall page does not yet report any investigative information about where the contamination began.

Cantaloupe Recall

In a separate, unrelated recall, Michigan-based grocery store chain Meijer recalled whole and select cantaloupe. The cantaloupe, packed by Arizona-based packer Eagle Produce, may be contaminated by Salmonella. The recall involves all Meijer stores in six states, Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky, and Wisconsin.
