Variety Trials 2014: Syngenta
As part of American Vegetable Grower’s (AVG) 2014 variety trial coverage, we visited Syngenta to find out about some of the new offerings from the seed company. We toured several demonstration plots and got an update on a new sweet corn variety, and more.

Cabo
Syngenta representative Mark Sigourney says Cabo is the company’s first entry into the high-quality Sh2 sweet corn category. It features a nice package that fills out well, with excellent coverage and a nice green husk. It has excellent eating quality, matures in 80 days, and is a very easy pick.

Captivation
This watermelon produces a heavy set of medium-to-large-sized blocky-shaped seedless fruit. It matures in about 89 days, and weighs 14 to 17 pounds. Flesh is firm and attractive red in color, and it has intermediate resistance to Anthracnose and Fusarium wilt.

Fascination
A high-yielding watermelon, Fascination produces fruit with deep-red, firm flesh containing small pips. Fruit weigh between 16 to 20 pounds and are blocky in shape. It matures two to three days earlier than mid-season varieties, and has improved disease resistance to Fusarium wilt race 1, and Anthracnose race 1.

Masai
Maturing in 57 days, Masai has a sieve size of 2 to 3, and is 4 inches in length. This bean features a uniform pod size, grows on a very upright bush, and is machine harvestable. It is medium-green in color and features a high resistance to bean common mosaic virus, halo blight races 1 and 2, and intermediate resistance to curly top and rust.

Prevail
Featuring strong seedling vigor and consistently high yields, Prevail has an excellent disease resistance package, as well as high stress and heat tolerance. It is well adapted to a wide range of growing conditions and performs well in the presence of the Eastern virus complex. Its plant structure and pod setting result in high percentage of marketable beans.
